Organics that are sent to a landfill for disposal contribute to methane production. The US EPA has identified landfills as the single largest source of methane (CH4), a potent greenhouse gas that is 23 times more efficient at trapping heat than carbon dioxide (CO2). Landfills contribute approximately 34% of all man-made methane released to the atmosphere in the US (USEPA, 2007). Whereas in 1990 recovery via composting only diverted 2% of the total solid waste stream, we now recover 20% through composting, including 62% of all yard trimmings (USEPA, 2006a)3.
