Colorado is a top producer of oil, coal, and natural gas – fossil fuels that emit greenhouse gases. In fact, Colorado is responsible for more than one-fourth of all coal bed methane produced in the United States. Methane is a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. Coal- and natural gas-fired power plants dominate electricity generation in Colorado. Colorado has a traditional regulated market for electric power. Xcel Energy, a major utility provider for Boulder County, is the largest electricity and natural gas provider in the state. Longmont Power and Communications obtains their electricity from Platte River Power Authority. Xcel Energy generally provides natural gas to the Longmont area. However, some customers in Longmont and Boulder are purchasing their natural gas from natural gas marketing companies such as Tiger, Seminole, and Ascent. Hydroelectric and wind power facilities account for most of Colorado’s renewable electricity generation. The state is experiencing a surge in wind and power installations and now ranks among the top 10 states for wind energy production and potential. General Information
